Health And The Organic Food Movement Go Hand In Hand

Sponsored Links:

What is the organic movement all about? A couple of things, namely health and environment. First, it is a reaction to decades of corporate farming companies growing crops with chemicals and pesticides, possibly to the detriment of our health.

There is also the buy local issue. Unlike many supermarket foods, which may be shipped from miles or even countries away, organic food is often produced locally. This supports local farmers and businesspeople, and conserves energy because there is less fuel wasted in food transport.

All of these are noble ideals. Still, not all products are affected by being organic. Some products are protected by a thick skin so that pesticides and chemicals don’t leach into the edible part. Others simply don’t take on that much of the products used in growing them.

Other foods are better to buy organic, because they are sensitive to pesticides or chemicals:

1. Meat: Nonorganic farming in large factory farms involves the use of both antibiotics (to keep down infections from unsanitary conditions and overcrowding, often) and growth chemicals (to encourage the animals to grow to maturity more quickly and be larger than they otherwise would). When you eat animals who had been fed these compounds, you often ingest the antibiotics and chemicals as well.

Another reason to choose organic meat is kindness toward animals. Any meat that is marked organic comes from animals who have been permitted time outside at least daily.

2. Coffee: watch for the “Fair Trade” label on coffee packages, as well as the organic label. If you buy fair trade coffee, you can be comfortable knowing that you are helping to support workers who have been paid fair wages for their labor.

3. Some fruits: the Environmental Working Group has put out a list naming which foods tend to have high concentrations of chemicals. The number one item on this list, with the highest concentration of chemicals, is peaches. Always purchase organic peaches – the thin skin of a peach, together with the pulpy fruit, means that they tend to absorb and retain the chemicals that they have been grown with.

You also want to be careful and purchase organic when buying apples, strawberries, cherries and grapes, and also wine since they are a grape product.

Aside from organic movement, the writer additionally frequently publishes information regarding the cork bulletin board and custom dry erase boards.
